Salvation Army Medals

The SAHPA is occasionally asked to help in the research of Salvation Army medals, particularly Officer’s Long Service Awards. We have seen quite a large number over the years and are always pleased to help. It has also been possible to reunite descendants with family medals – always a great joy. We are more than happy to look out for particular names.

Several Long Service Medals are either on the market at the moment or coming on to the market and now is a good time to purchase these items. Most excitingly, a rare two medal combination in the shape of Order of the Founder along with its Long Service Award will soon be auctioned and should fetch a very high price.

The SAHPA has also heard of plans to produce a medal in commemoration of those Salvationists who worked for the Salvation Army in World War Two. Any further news of this will be most welcomed. There was of course an issue of a medal produced in the name of the Salvation Army and General Bramwell Booth after World War One. Such an award would be a welcome recognition of the Salvationists who worked so hard to support both troops and civilians, not least in the Red Shield. Whether such an award could be claimed posthumously by families or just for those few still alive is a thorny issue. British readers will perhaps remember the recent acrimony caused in the press by the commemorative award to recognise the Bevan Boys – but only those still living.
