The Story of The Horridge Museum - Ilfracombe
Charlotte Horridge

Our Glorious Heritage: As a life long Salvationists with a great love for our Lord and our Army, it is not surprising that an interest in Salvation Army memorabilia developed. It all started some 24 years ago seeing in a junk shop a small white jug with William Booth on it. Feeling it ought not to be there, we bought it if only to take it from the shop. Other things were added and as the collection grew, so did our interest in Army memorabilia. For many years as we collected items they were boxed and stored away because of lack of space.

On moving back to Ilfracombe room was found to start the display. Imagine the joy and excitement of unpacking so many boxes of treasures, all of great value to us because they give us today an insight into early Salvationists - the way they thought and worked, and the great inspiration they give to us today. The small display is now a large Home Museum which we view with joy and share with as many people as possible. Living in a sea-side town and very near our Hall, I am able to invite people back to see for themselves. Over the years it is has brought great pleasure and delight as people have looked back to bygone years, thought about their lives, their parents and grandparents.

Postcards are of great interest to many as they look through finding family and friends. Officers are taken back to Corps where they were once stationed and many stories are told and retold. One could almost write a book on what has been said. People are astonished and filled with amazement, with a thirst to know more of our Army. History questions are asked, suggestions are made and together we have a picture of our wonderful organization. Thank you to the many people who have written saying how much they enjoyed seeing the collection and to many others who have sent items for display - they are all very much appreciated. Our American friends have played their part also and made a great contribution to the success of our Home Museum. If in Ilfracombe don't forget to call and see this for yourselves, it is well worth a visit. Our humble beginning with one small jug is now a large representation of the Army's heritage and thus helping to keep our glorious past alive.
