Although not intended as presenting reviews, a number of interesting publications deserve mention. We are always keen to hear of locally produced books. Information on obtaining books may be had from the Editor of
CMHA.
Early, Louis R. I Well Remember (Ammonite Books, 1998) details the varied and extraordinary experience of a Salvationist in mid to late 1940s Great Britain and Germany. Bob Early really was the embodiment of General Carpenter's wartime ideal of what a Salvationist should be.
Elstow, Victor A Century of Brass (private publication, 1990) is a fascinating history of Wellingborough Salvation Army Band. The Corps was founded as a branch of The Christian Mission and still uses the Mission Hall for its Young People's work. The Band's long and dedicated history is meticulously recorded and includes reference to the Motor Ambulance Band of World War One.
Hattersley, Roy. Blood and Fire (published 21 October 1999) is the third book in recent years to evaluate the early days of the Salvation Army. Following on from Glenn K Horridge's The Salvation Army. Origins and Early Days, 1865 1900 (Ammonite Books, 1993) and Norman Murdojh's Origins of the-Salvation Army (Tennessee, 1994), Hattersley details the story of the Army's early leaders and the Movement's social impact.
Hide, Carolyn The Drum Has Finally Arrived (Hurstville, Australia, 1999) is an excellent history of Hurstville Corps. Wonderfully detailed and well written, it is an inspiration to read.
Horridge, Charlotte The Salvation Army, A Pictorial Record (Ammonite Books, 1989) is a popular small book containing 90 pictures with comment from the Army's earliest days until the 1930s.
Neale, Janine The Steps of a Young Man (private publication, no date) tells the fascinating story of Douglas
Neale. Douglas and janine served as Divisional leaders in South Africa between 1976 and 1991. Commissioner Albert Mingay wrote of this book "It is indeed compulsive reading".
Rightmire, R. David Salvationist Samurai: Gunpei Yamamuro and the Rise of the Salvation Army in
Japan (Lanham, Maryland:The Scarecrow Press, Inc. 1997).
Word and Deed is sub-titled A Journal of Salvation Army Theology and
Ministry. The aim of this American production is to encourage and disseminate the thinking of Salvationists and other Christian colleagues on matters broadly related to the theology and ministry of the Army. Volume I (in two parts) has contained excellent articles and Volume 2 is eagerly awaited.
