In memory of Ernest Titmus, co-founder of Hope and Glory, London
John Pym

Although dealers in antiques and commemoratives often express a love for their items, it is rare to find such a genuine passion as one encounters when entering Hope and Glory. The shop was opened in 1982 when Ernest Titmus and Robert Lower acquired the lease.

Ernest was born in Plymouth, Devon in 1927 and there first came into contact with the Salvation Army. Although very poor, he would often later tell customers how the Army gave him a pair of shoes - a very practical way of expressing Christianity. When Ernest moved to London in the Second World War to find work, he would visit Regent Hall Corps and so continue his association with the Army.

He became interested in collecting royal commemoratives in the 1960s after seeing a Queen Victoria Jubilee mug in a shop window. He purchased it for ten shillings and this was the start of a collection which grew to approximately 1,500 items by 1976. Ernest and Robert started trading unwanted items and they quickly built up a reputation for quality and knowledge.

Hope and Glory opened after Ernest's retirement and with most of Ernest's private collection for sale on the shelves. He had decided to concentrate mainly on certain Doulton pieces. Some of his personal items were fine and rare Salvation Army pieces which he had cherished. These were bought for the Horridge Collection where they are equally cared for.

Ernest passed away in May 1994 after a short illness. His funeral was held at Regent Hall Corps and it is a mark of the man that people still talk of him and miss him. Hope and Glory continues to sell the finest quality pieces in spotless surroundings. It remains a joy for anyone with an interest in History to visit.
