Volume Two Contents

Editorial

Welcome to the second edition of The Christian Mission Historical Association's journal. We were delighted with the way Volume 1 was received and in particular, the interest created by Rhianon Johnson's original article on The Salvation Army and the Third Reich. This work has since been reprinted and reported in Link (York Citadel's popular Corps Magazine) and The Salvationist. One result of this has been another fascinating and revealing article of a type rarely seen. It is produced in the journal for the first time and we hope that it will provide a further understanding of the Salvation Army in Nazi Germany.

As our journal continues to reflect the immense interest in the history of the Salvation Army it is here worth reiterating our aims:

To assist and encourage the recording of Salvation Army history and the preservation of heritage.

To publish an Annual Journal providing news of historical research in Salvation Army and related fields.

To facilitate the exchange of historical material.

To take Salvation Army history to a wider audience.

To publish occasional papers.

In reviewing the past year it is interesting to seeing where the emphasis of the Association's work has fallen. The response to the Sales Lists have been a little disappointing, perhaps due to the paucity of items which have therefore not reflected the needs of collectors with specialist interests. (However all the prints offered in the last sale were immediately sold). In addition, there have been welcome initiatives and subsequent growth from other suppliers of Salvation Army items (reviewed elsewhere in the journal). As we whole heartedly support these (and in some cases help supply them), there may have been an adverse effect on our sales. We propose therefore to go to one Sales List in the first half of each year and the journal in the latter half of each year.

We have successfully found a number of items from various `wants lists'. These range from rare books to early badges. Other `wants' fulfilled concerned stamps, First Day Covers, a cap and a cornet! However where the largest number of enquiries have been concerned is with either identifying or, more commonly, producing pictures. We now have direct access to over 12,000 pictures, postcards and photographs so the message is please do ask if you need anything. Finally, we are happy to seek information on specific areas if interest and overseas members have already found this free service useful.

Where we have needed occasional clarification or are unable to answer a question, then we have redirected the enquiry to the ever helpful team of experts at the International Heritage Centre in London.

Membership and Subscription Notes

As of 1 November 2000 the CM11A has 35 fully paid up members around the world. We continue to get enquiries, the latest of which has just arrived from India! The money raised by membership subscription and the sales goes on the printing and postage costs for the journal and sales list. Membership will fall due in January of each year and because of our success, the 2001 membership subscription rates will remain at £4.00 for the United Kingdom, £5.00 for the rest of Europe and £6.00 for the rest of the world (journal and Sales list).

Convention

We are very pleased to announce that a History Convention, focusing on Salvation Army History, will be held in Gloucestershire, England on Saturday 23 June 2001. A booking form has been included with this journal. The form may be reproduced for friends and any enquiries should be addressed to the Journal's Editor.

Occasional Papers

The Association is always willing to hear from anyone with suggestions for an occasional paper. Manuscript guidance is available from the Editor.
