Editorial

Welcome to the third annual Journal of The Christian Mission Historical Association and thank you for all your support. We are delighted to report a steady increase in membership and the Association now has over 50 members. Several of these came about as a result of inquiries received after the report of out first Convention appeared in the Salvationist. We extend a warm welcome to you.

The Convention in June was certainly a wonderful celebration of Salvation Army history. A full report appears further on but it was good to share with so many friends. It is the Association's intention to hold this as a biannual event.

As well as the Convention and Journal, we were able to send out a booklet on the early day history of the now closed Whitchurch Corps. This caused much interest and the CMHA will produce another such booklet in the first half of next year. We have had several offers of booklets with permission to reproduce them and we hope that members will continue to find such publications interesting. This work covers at least some of our aims and we are also happy to give advice on publications. Such advice, as well as any help given, is of course free so please do ask.

We have again been very active in answering inquiries about a range of items and as well as researching items, giving opinions / valuations and lending material for displays. Please keep us informed of your interesting and unusual items. Also do drop us a line with your articles and stories. We have been able to put several people with similar interests in touch with each other and have found many items and books for people. As always, the International Heritage Centre has been of great help with information and we wish them well as they continue their somewhat nomadic existence.

All the history/ collecting groups concerned with the Salvation Army have seen a continued increase in interest. It is fitting here to pay a tribute to the hard work of several private individuals who work hard to keep us informed: Harry Hayes (Salvation Army Philatelic Circle); Colin Waller (Salvation Army 78 Regal Association); Lt. Colonel (R) Joan Williams (Bookworm Alley); David and Adele Miller (sacollectables); and David Copper (Salvophilately). The addresses for these people are on page 3.

In view of having several new members, it may well be of interest to repeat the aims of the CMHA. Your views, comments or suggestions concerning these or indeed any matters relating to Salvation Army history are very welcome:

To assist and encourage the recording of Salvation Army history and the preservation of its heritage.

To publish an Annual journal providing news of historical research in Salvation Army and related fields.

To facilitate the exchange of historical material.

To take Salvation Army history to a wider audience.

To publish occasional papers.
