Editorial

Welcome to our fourth annual Journal. It has been a great delight preparing this publication, mainly because of the willingness of people to send in contributions. In addition there has been much correspondence and in particular, we have been able to help a considerable number of people with advice on book and article publication. The diverse ideas are truly fascinating and one trend becomes clear - there is a tremendous labour of love going into these works.

Many people have contacted us with queries relating to a variety of topics. These include questions concerning Corps, individuals and badges. More out of the ordinary perhaps have been questions relating to old 78 records, legal documents, war medals, black Salvationists in Victorian Britain, plus the continuing research into the Salvation Army and Nazi Germany.

A number of people have helped with the queries and it is always enjoyable to talk to friends about their particular areas of speciality. I must particularly thank Rob Brettle, David Copper, Harry Hayes, David and Del Miller, Gordon Taylor, Colin Waller and Lt. Colonel Joan Williams but there are many other people both here and abroad who have also helped. 1 would also of course like to thank my wife Christine for her invaluable support and especially for pointing out that on our new computer I could save hours of typing time by scanning in articles!

It is pleasing to hear that the various Associations and ventures related to the study of Salvation Army history are doing so well. Harry reports that membership of the Salvation Army Philatelic Circle continues to increase and similarly great news comes from Colin's S.A. Regal 78 Association. Joan William's Bookworm Alley features in many conversations and 1 know that her sales and loan service is greatly valued. Contact details for all these are listed below.

We hope that you find the articles of interest and perhaps they will encourage you to write your own. As to next year, we have an excellent 'Occasional Paper' to publish around Easter as well as the Convention to look forward to. It only remains for me to thank you all for your support and to wish you a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

Membership and Subscription Notes

As of publication, the CMHA has 63 fully paid up members from around the world. Our membership is wonderfully diverse and it is always a pleasure to hear from so many friends. Membership falls due in January of each year and subscription rates for 2003 are £5.00 for the United Kingdom and Europe, £6.00 for the rest of the world.

Convention

We are delighted to announce that our second Convention will be held in Gloucestershire, England, on Saturday 7 June 2003. This is particularly exciting as it will be a joint venture with the Salvation Army Philatelic Circle. Booking forms will he sent out early in the New Year. We hope to repeat the great success of our first Convention and look forward to seeing you there.

Occasional Papers

The Association is always willing to hear from anyone with suggestions for an occasional paper. Manuscript guidance is available from the Editor.

Research is also being conducted on Captain Arthur R Harvey who was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1942 whilst serving in Dover.
