Welcome to our fifth annual Journal. It
has been a superb year for the Association with the
highlight being our Biannual Convention in June which was
very well attended. Salvation Army history is attracting
ever increasing numbers of researchers and we are pleased
to be able to help in many diverse and often obscure
areas. It is always good to be able to help both members
and non-members and we have a well established network of
specialists who are also good friends.
It never ceases to amaze me just where items of Salvation
Army history are to be found. In terms of the written
material, several members have mentioned finding reference
to the Salvation Army in books and documents. One I
particularly liked was hearing about P.C. Simon Dell’s
book Policing the Peninsula, which tells the story
of West Country policing over the last 150 years. In it he
records the arrest of Evangeline Booth at Torquay in 1888,
along with several bandsmen who were ‘guilty’ of
playing their instruments in a street on a Sunday. P.C.
Dell has found a marvellous photograph of Evangeline
posing between two policemen outside the police station
and I am not sure who looks the most intimidating! In
regard to objects, I have been in correspondence with an
expert on the history of mitrailleuse needle cases. This
was in response to a chance conversation after a member
spotted one for sale bearing, at the top, the Salvation
Army crest. It was confirmed for me that during the late
1880s and 1890s needle cases were produced, in London,
through Jahncke Limited, often with the name of any
company or product on them.
On a personal note, it was a great delight to welcome
General Eva Burrows to our Salvation Army Museum in
Ilfracombe earlier this year. She spent a considerable
time looking at various exhibits and was very kind in her
comments. She particularly liked some U.S. correspondence
of the 1890’s which complained of British Staff Officers
who were felt to be only interested in money.
Finally, as many of you know, I have moved to a new post
which entails working very long days (and some weekends)!
Thank you therefore for your patience with this year’s
delayed Journal.
