Major
Nathan Johnson's Mobile Salvation Army Museum
Collected, preserved
& displayed |
|
 |
Introduction:
Major
Nate's
Mobile Museum of artefacts and Collectables is a
personal collection built and organized to be displayed
at diverse and numerous public Salvation Army events
both local and international.
Collecting has always been
a hobby of his and so when he became a Salvation Army
officer it made good stewardship sense to collect that
which quite often gets thrown out with the trash....bits
and pieces of colourful heritage. |
|
|
|
Being part of an
International Army whose focus is always upon the others
we are serving, little or no attention has been centred
upon preserving those items that help to paint a colourful
picture of those who are providing the service. As a
result a great deal of historical memorabilia support for
who we were and who we are today in Christ Jesus has been
lost. However there are some people out there committed to
collecting, preserving and actively displaying Salvation
Army historical memorabilia and Captain Nate Johnson just
happens to be one of them!
Major
Nate Johnson first started collecting Salvation
Army items in 1986. The collection started with a USA 5
cent postage stamp and FDC. He provided his first display
of Salvation Army artefacts in 1988 at his Corps
Centennial Celebration in Belleville, IL. He was joined on
that first exhibit by his good friend Major Gary Van
Hoesen, and since then they have provided over 90 displays
of Army history at Army events including building
dedications, Centennials, Divisional gatherings,
Territorial Congresses, National Conferences and the 2000
International Congress in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Items in the
collection date back to 1871, and what has been gathered
and displayed to the public has been built on a budget
of $10.00 a week. Many items down through the years have
been donated to Nate for public exhibit purposes, and a
sincere debt of gratitude is owed to Booth family
relatives, generals, officers, soldiers and various Army
membership and friends for the generous level of charity
they have bestowed. |
|
|
Major Nate's
personal belief is that Jesus Christ is honoured by our
heritage and that more of our history should be seen
publicly. He has therefore made donations to several
Heritage Centres, has items on display at the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington DC and travels extensively setting
up his mobile museum where the Army meets the public.
Should Major Nate's museum set up stall in your area a
visit is an absolute must.
Major Johnson also works closely with other individuals
who share his beliefs and his passion for Salvation Army
collectables and artifacts.

will be attending. |

A personal message from
Major Nathan Johnson
I would like to think that I invented the swap (trade) when it
comes to Salvation Army memorabilia but if someone else would like
to step in and take up the title please contact me, I have some
items I want to swap with you!! The purpose of swapping is to
exchange our duplicates and/or unwanted items for other items that
we would prefer to have. In my case I swap so that I can increase
the number of different kinds of items, so as to show the world a
more complete picture supplement of our great Army. It has been my
great privilege to swap with collectors from all over the world,
some with a single area of interest such as stamps, postcards,
badges, etc., as well as with those who collect a little of
everything. My life has been enriched and collection advanced by
these gracious contacts who I now know as friends.
I look forward to hearing
from you. In Jesus' Name
Major Nathan L. Johnson. Captnate@aol.com
