The
Regal 78 Association
A "must join"
for all Salvation Army Collectors |
|
|
The Regal 78
Association was formed in May 1995. The aim and
objectives of the association are, firstly, to provide a
forum whereby collectors of Salvation Army 78 rpm
records and other relevant vintage sound media can sell
or swap lists and records and so preserve this aspect of
Salvation Army history. Secondly, links with former Salvationists are
maintained.
The association confines itself to records issued before
1958 - the end of Salvation Army Regal era - or later,
provided it is a 78 rpm record.
In addition to SA-originated material, recordings that
refer to or parody, the Army are also included. |

At present the association
has 45 members, made up of 40 UK residents, one Canadian, one
Australian and three Americans. A quarterly newsletter contains 78
gossip, features on soloists and personalities, and lists of
material for sale, swap or wanted. Between 1927 and 1958,
The Salvation Army - in conjunction with Columbia Gramophone
Company, latterly a component subsidiary of EMI - issued 220 78
rpm records featuring headquarters and corps music sections,
instrumental and vocal soloists and the voices of three generals
of The Salvation Army.
The first recordings were issued on the Regal label with G- and
MR- series prefixes and a maroon label. Later, Army sections
appeared on Regal Zonophone with a dark green, red and gold label.
In May 1935 Regal Zonophone Salvation Army records appeared with a
royal blue and gold label incorporating the crest and MF- as the
series prefix. The Sweden, USA Eastern and USA Central Territories
issued their own series of 78 rpm records.
In addition to these
official records there were several private recordings made
in conjunction with overseas tours or as fundraising ventures.
With the advent, successfully, of 45 rpm records, LPs and CDs, 78
rpms are no longer played or collected by the majority of people,
and many have been dumped or destroyed.
By working closely with
the Army's International Heritage Centre, the British Library
National Sound and Archives and EMI's archives, the association
has been able to uncover and piece together a history of SA sound
recording.
